Ask HN: Best advice for transitioning from 9 to 5 to consulting work?

I’ve been doing 9 to 5 enterprise IT for over a decade. I’ve had to report to people, I’ve had people report to me. I want to move into consulting and helping startups get their footing with IT processes, procedures, and implementations. Has anyone moved down this path? What were the good and bad from your experience transitioning to consulting work?
