I don't see how this relates to press freedom - the request has nothing to do with the journalists, restricting, or analyzing their sources. I see this the same as asking the library who checked out copies of a book...
What I dont hear is USA Today touting that they don't keep records, if they're that concerned about privacy
Reminds me of that time the feds tried to catch Unabomber by staking out a newspaper kiosk:
