Ask HN: How to reach out in people in different teams?

I started work at a big bank and there are teams scattered all around the world.

My manager is always encouraging me to reach out to different people and see what they're working on but I am finding it strange to just send people emails when they might be busy working.

So I was just curious, people who work with different teams across the world, what's your take on this?
