Interesting environment. I like that it's turn based so quick and accurate reflexes aren't an advantage, just pure decision making.

I wonder if something like Civilization would be a little easier, more popular with viewers, and would still push the state-of-the-art forward?

I guess the simplicity of computation and accessibility is also a big factor here. Since NetHack is literally an ASCII game, all your computation goes in the agent.

An environment based on Civilization would be very interesting though.
