It's fairly clear why: after Steve Jobs died, there was no one left to rein in Jony Ive's self-indulgent tendencies and advocate for the user.
Fortunately now that Ive's left, some of his more boneheaded decisions are being quietly reversed, from the butterfly keyboard to the AppleTV remote. Who knows, maybe we will even get cables with proper strain relief in the future?
