Mircea Popescu was, amongst other things, the owner/operator of Mpex, one of the first exchanges for bitcoin. He was a vocal proponent for bitcoin and called out bitcoin scams regularly, being one of the first to raise alarm bells about the BTCST Ponzi run by Trendon Shavers and MtGox.
