*How Apple Might Die

Title seems to have been auto-editorialized.

edit: fixed. Had no idea you could edit HN posts on the web. I've always used a third-party mobile client.

I thought at one time the idea that Nokia or Blackberry would die was absurd. But the world underpinning their technology changed and it happened. Doubtful with Apple but a pretty good thought exercise.
This article IMHO draws a pretty dystopian view of a future of everything-as-a-service, i.e. being at the mercy of enormous corporations even for the most simple task every time you use the service. This isn't a world I want to live in. Personal computing implies being in control of your data and code (even though you only purchased a copy of the software you need instead of compiling or writing it yourself). I think that Apple is doing fairly well in this respect so far, except for the side loading issues with iOS.

I agree with the author that Apple currently may not have a visionary person at the top of the company. This was a problem during the difficult times in the 90s and it seems to be similar after Steve Jobs' death.

But the way things are going right now, Apple could survive on the products of one of their product lines alone (e.g. Arm-based SoCs)...
