Just this morning, I cleared my Spam folders, and I get thousands of spam emails, and after many years of using email and seeing how persistent spammers are, I wonder, is spamming profitable? how much do they earn?
A lot of them were commissioned to spam knockoff viagra pills, or other pharmaceuticals and they take a % of all conversions. Hundreds of millions in total/yearly.
Other spam is outright scams as well or efforts by cybercrime groups to recruite money mules etc.
So I suppose it depends what type of spam you're referring to but as an whole in cybercrime its one of the oldest and most profitable.
The attractive part for the spammers is that the costs are extremely low. There are lots of databases with leaked e-mail addresses available.
So even when only a small fraction of the recipients fall for it and the scammer only makes a limited amount of money per victim, it can still be highly profitable.
