Lyme is a pretty nasty disease. I know several people who had it and some took more than one year to recover and some that still have residual effects.
In the Netherlands ticks are fairly common and approximately 1 in 5 ticks carry the disease. Which means that is probably less safe here to walk in nature than it is in most tropical countries.
