The most shocking part of this to me isn't that the majority believe it but the red-blue divide is so low. But maybe not that crazy given comments from the former FDA commissioner, how absolutely botched the WHO investigation was, and others in the current admin saying that it's worth investigating.
Something that really worries me about this entire discussion, is that it really does not matter whether or not this virus came from the lab.
The real threats are the current pandemic and future pandemics.
The current pandemic is a serious problem and just pointing fingers at some actors will not help solve it.
Future pandemics are a real problem. The Spanish flu and polio were major pandemics and we really need scientific research to warn about possible future problems. We need labs like the Wuhan Institute of Virology to do this.
There’s always a debt to the truth. We put the COVID debt on a high-interest credit card to get people locked down and get vaccines out. The balance is due.

It is obvious that the measures that were taken have a high cost [0]. On the other hand if they were not taken there would be a high cost as well.
I was arguing that knowing the true origin of the virus is not very important.
[0] It does not really matter for this subject if you define cost as just money or human happiness.
