This style/tone of headline is really starting to annoy me. It feels so condescending. Am I alone in this?

No, you're not alone. I read it the same way.

And sure, the flight matters a bit -- but mostly, I'm of the opinion that it doesn't matter much, and the article failed to make a good case for why I'm mistaken.

“A bit” as in the smallest possible unit of classical information capacity…yes, I can see an argument for that. The event did occur, that bit did flip.

Others may argue that is still overly generous.
