They probably always had encryption, Amazon enforces it for the transport layer if you use services like Alexa for example.

But the article is clearer and specifically mentions end-to-end encryption. It is really nice of them that they implemented this.

It is NOT in any way normal that a government can access data owned by citizens at all. Their crime problems won't be solved with surveillance. This is such a ridiculous request...

An formidable opposition would put the boot on government that obviously lost control on crime when it makes such demands.
