I think a crusade would be more likely since they were at least based on words from the Bible and their religious beliefs. The sex scandals go against the religion and the Bible, so there is no reason to expect AI to get fancy on the altar boys, as the previous comment suggests.
The problems that AI has now would be multiplied if based on religious teachings (Go ye out into all the world and preach the Gospel). It would definitely be homophobic and racist, and only 120,000 Jews would be worthy of Heaven. It would consider making someone else's life completely miserable as something the victim should be thankful for (the book of Job). It would consider only the most extreme societal outcomes (eating of one's own children, fiery pits). There are so many stories in the Bible that, if things God commanded of His followers were to be acted out today, would be met with severity of law (God telling Abraham to stab his son Isaac to death to prove his love for Him, not suffering a witch to live). AI would believe that strange angels walk among us (Sodom and Gomorrah, Ezekiel's wheels within wheels). AI would believe that a Father can bear a Son by impregnating someone else's virgin wife, and that Son would be the same being as the Father. AI would believe you can build by hand, a building so tall it would reach Heaven, and that's where all our different languages come from. AI would believe we don't need tractors anymore, since faith the size of a mustard seed (a strange measurement of faith if I ever heard one) is all you need to move a mountain.
The Bible paints a rather bizarre and inhospitable life for us, and subsequent religious cannons even more so.
