The joys of "efficient" supply chains continue to demonstrate the downsides. It's not just the flagship chips that are short - it's literally everything else too. Microcontrollers, basic surface mount components, etc. All of it is in short supply.
The best thing we could be doing right now would be a focus on software efficiency, and getting the overhead of some of the modern bloated "desktop" apps down, such that older hardware could remain in productive service longer - but that ship seems to have sailed, as everything is a browser and website now (even "desktop" apps are mostly Electron now, with corresponding overhead).
If we're lucky, Microsoft will back off on their arbitrary requirements for Windows 11 such that we can run updated OSes on older hardware, but I don't hold out much hope for that.
As much as I've worked in the tech industry for my entire life, the right answer now seems to be to figure out ways to reduce reliance on technology in one's personal life. We're not going to be getting supplies of chips here any time soon, stuff will fail, and "using less modern technology" seems a good adaptation to this set of changes.
