This kind of research really needs to develop/use less stiff and/or non metallic conductive implants. For example organic conductive materials. The immune response to stiff metallic electrodes means that it will never last as a bionic implant for applications.

It's likely that patents on suitable materials used for neural electrodes will have to expire before they can be more generally used in publicly funded research.

I think certain research needs to be justified and this falls within that camp
