For me, the key to breaking out of this loop was to change the Code->Repeat step to Code->Communicate->Propose->Repeat.
My visibility, raises, and promotions became more frequent when I started sharing what I had done and explaining the positive impact, how it benefitted our client, and started proposing what we could do next to have an even greater impact.
I recommend every dev read about the Heilmeier Catechism[1], a set of key questions to address when presenting that inform your audience about what is important to them, and that devs try to address some or all of those questions in every client-facing presentation.
