A particularly silly example. Lots of alternatives do exist, but the value of Facebook is that other people use it, so /convincing people/ is an inherent part of creating viable Facebook alternatives.

Also, a lot of the complaints about Facebook stem from it tracking you via the sites you visit and via your friends who use it. Which, again, can only be solved by convincing people.

The other examples, like solar power and fusion, ignore the fact that most people have zero capital. The only meaningful way for most people to invest in a technology project is to vote (and convince others to vote) for a government that will invest in it.
