The authorities never heard of taqiyya.
Doesn't apply unless you're basically in a life or death situation for Sunni Muslims.
Is Turkmenistan an islamist state?
Radio free Europe doesn’t have a good record of credibility, certainly much less than even the New York Times or Washington Post.

This reads a lot like clickbait.

This article links to Azatlyk Radiosy article. I'm not sure of its credibility, but AFAIK it's one of the few (or may be only) independent source about Turkmenistan.
Interestingly, i faced this exactly a year and a half ago and I swear that was real. I ended using Evie android launcher because it let's you "hide apps" and that became very popular as people would be randomly stopped on the road walking or from vehicles and their phones searched.

Heck when the government calls you a "terrorist" for using something like a VPN which would mean you end up in a jail and your life is over, I say that is a life or death situation.

And yes, I have lied. Not because I felt like it but because I needed to be online without them hunting me down.

Funny thing, there were like multiple types of surveillance and blocks, at one point I was able to ssh into an amazon aws server free one because amazon was whitelisted and that meant allowing aws and I forwarded my traffic through port 22. No blocks. I felt like a muh hacker much.

Very nice. When the government calls us a terrorist for wanting privacy and using VPN's, then it's time to embrace the label. I have no problem with what ever name they throw at me.
