OSS Proposal Template

I've been invited to contribute a component to an open source project that would have significant benefit for my company as well as all users of the OSS project. My company is not particularly well acquainted with OSS or what having an employee contributing to an OSS project would entail.

Would anyone happen to have a template for such a proposal that would help me communicate the benefit of this undertaking? Baring that, would anyone have any advice on the most salient points to communicate or resources I could use to explain OSS in layman's terms?
