I always thought real numbers cannot “exist” in the physical world, since a single real number could contain a universe of its own.

There is a scifi book 'Occam's Razor' that treats time as coming in quantum-like chunks. As far as people in this universe are concerned, time is continuous but in between the time-chunks, there is room for millions of other time-chunks for millions of other universes.
