The scientists weren't wrong specifically about the health impacts. But they were wrong about policy prescription.
Their domain of expertise is the area of science they specialize in. That doesn't qualify them to know what the best policy is, which requires knowledge of other areas such as economics, politics, etc. The best policy is an inter-disciplinary question.
Is that a rabbit hole you really want to jump down. Data can be biased and lead to incorrect conclusions. Best for you to not look at any statistics concerning race which leads to absolute false narratives.
Science is ever changing and evolving. We are becoming more clever with recognizing biases and separating correlation from causation. But it's never perfect
"Most people today regard America’s experiment with alcohol prohibition as a national embarrassment, rightly repealed in 1933. So it will be with the closures and lockdowns of 2020-21, someday. "
I don't think so.
Everyone seems to forget that the purpose of the lockdown was to make time to prepare enough ventilators for those that the disease would effect seriously. It definitely went on for way longer than it needed to I'm not complaining.
I also think the whole covid experience has had an overall positive effect on society. It has been a negative effect for people like landlords or businesses owners who exploited their employees.
Things have been shaken up, and the situation is still developing from that input.
This comparison of prohibition and Covid-19 lockdowns is apples to oranges to say the least. Drinking alcohol is a choice. Getting Covid-19 is not. Death from alcohol takes years of abuse. Death from Covid-19, for some, can take weeks. Vaccines are not magical, they are excellent applied biological science. So are masks, social distancing, and lockdowns. I would like to see enforced vaccination, because your freedom to stay unvaccinated conflicts directly with my freedom to stay alive and healthy.

Lots of drunk people get violent. Alcoholics can die from simply being dried out. Alcohol is a drug habit that's really hard to shake.
That doesn't mean prohibition was correct. However, the negative effects of alcohol are quite well documented.
