This recent Show HN post has working embedded links:

Whereas when I tried to do the same thing here:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28223893

the links just showed up as plain text. What gives?

Drop an email to the Contact link in the footer and point out this Ask — they'll know exactly what's happening and be able to explain and/or repair.

It's funny that HN's automated title curation has made your post sound nonsensical. HN auto-strips 'How' and 'How to' from titles, but you can usually get it to go back by manually editing it.

That makes sense! It got a lot of traction, so I modeled my post after it but then ended up having to post the links in a comment :-(
