I was under this impression that this was already known. Looks like this is from 2016, so I guess I was correct :). Perhaps we can add (2016) to the title for clarity.

How would anyone from that time know that this was from space? I assume he had it for this reason, but how would he even know that?

Someone probably saw the meteor crash, then found the crater and the meterorite.
