Most non-tech people are oblivious to the depth of Linus's contribution. As a Linux/tech person, it's hard imagine a world where there was no alternative to M$ or Apple. "Regular" people would have an even harder time understanding it.
We need a new Linus to create a viable, competitive alternative in the mobile space. Android is a good starting point, but so far no de-Googled Android (what I call Undroid) alternatives seem that viable.
