This "excess deaths" is like Obama's "jobs saved", only in reverse. Who can tell whether those poor folks wouldn't have died within 1-2 years?
Elsewhere it was reported that a lot (80-90%?) of India's population has Covid-19 antibodies. If we assume 80% had it, 4.55MM would amount to a 0.5% rate of mortality - roughly in line with other places despite the relatively modest healthcare means available to the government and people.
To put the title figure into some perspective, it suggests an average of 281,250 per month in excess the normal.
India in 2019 had something like 1,141,666 deaths / month on average. So a 24% increase on that assuming the numbers on my quick search line up. It would be interesting to know the fluctuations over a decade for better bird's eye.
