I'm a fan of this sort of back-to-the-basics thing. I wrote a library that does something similar (our syntaxes seem very similar, I do like yours rather a lot!). I still use this library in production code, and get a great lot of mileage out of it! :p ;) xx
Yes, rediscovering the basics is fun and making use of the native functionality that is always there but we never touch it with modern frameworks like React feels natural.
