The amount of permits, fees, plans and various payoffs that need to be made for a flight to even cross through middle eastern borders is daunting. This doesn't seem like an imaginary rambo mission for that reason.
There are a lot of questions, but I wonder why they thought it necessary to drag weapons along. Anyone who has ever been involved in a civilian flight over there would have told you how dumb that is.
Couldn't they have just bought a few RPGs and AKs down at the local bazaar like everyone else? They probably could have picked up a few ARs too, right?

What was their purpose? To fight the Taliban? To recover US citizens? Recover high value items? To aid the Taliban?
The article makes it sound like a bunch of civilians chartered a flight on their own but it had to have been backed by some very high level interests.
