OP here. I scraped the components of CPI from the Bureau of Labor Statistics website and built a chart to go along with it. I thought starting everything at 0% and charting cumulative inflation was an interesting visualization, as it helps to demonstrate compounding effects and why certain sectors have seen massive price increases.
Aside from obvious points of interests like housing and medical care, check out "Used cars and trucks" and the noticeable spike caused by the pandemic.
This looks pretty cool, well done. It would be cool if you could see average rate of inflation per category per year, i.e. inflation was, idk, 5% for automobiles in 1996. I'm on mobile so I might be blind to whether this is an option or not :)
