Ask HN: London High-End Salaries

54 points by test-account123 ↗ HN
This is London specific.

What was your total compensation (TC) last year, including breakdown into salary, stock bonus (if any), cash bonus (if any), or anything else (benefits, pension etc)? What is your job title, company, industry, or sector? The rules are that any auxiliary information is welcome but optional (if you are worried someone will recognise you don’t give out too much) but top level posts have to have a number on them. Also specify curency if not £

It's almost midnight in London - maybe post sometime during the day there?

Senior Architect - Global (US HQ) software consultancy.

Main skillset is Java/Python/AWS and associated tech, mainly in a financial services setting, so thats where they post me.

2021 comp £140k base £9k sign on bonus £17.5k annual bonus $40k RSU's - 25% vest each year

All the usual benefits, private medical for full family (wife, kids), pension match upto 10% etc, 26 days leave + public holidays..

All this, and i'm still interviewing for a new role!

May I ask why? Bad work-life balance? Bored?
Sure. General boredom and tiredness arising from many years operating in what are heavily political environments, is just giving me itchy feet.

The other opportunity is with a startup, so quite different. Whilst i'm under no illusions regarding the politics, i'd be able to focus more on the tech and move more quickly with it vs where I am now. The base pay is surprisingly similar, albeit with no cash bonuses in the first year, but the equity on offer 'could' amount to something significant in a few years.

If offered, i'll probably jump. Should the startup crash and burn (quite likely) I'll have hopefully learnt some new skills and can always jump back into $(large_org) later on.

Feels like time to roll the dice...

That sounds all dandy and exciting! Good luck!
How many years of experience do you have? I have 2 years of experience in Java and AWS. I'll be graduating soon from an MSc in computer science from the University of Liverpool and was wondering salary should I expect if I find a job.
Sure, I have 17yrs experience.

I started out on a graduate scheme (after a BSc Maths) working for one of the global banks on ~£28,500 (in London). This was considered a good starting salary back then.

You have a very good higher level degree there and a bright future ahead of you, congratulations and best of luck!
