Very well written. I do wonder why we have this propensity to build things that require significant maintenance just to squeeze an extra drop out. We are far beyond the point of diminishing returns in what we build, you see it in software also.
The essay ends with a photo of Amsterdam. They are pretty but not a good example for the thesis, as they do require regular maintenance,
Sustainable infrastructure enables cities to function for the benefit of both people and the environment. Now there are many global initiatives that are aimed at changing urban infrastructure, for the better, of course.
I couldn’t help thinking all along that this “sustainable” infrastructure was powered by suffering of low-paid workers and extreme levels of inequality.
