Ask HN: Meta: HN Commentary

I'm a recent-lurker-and-signee; with the negativity and doom-scrolling that's so pervasive in our modern discourse, I'd like to kick off this thread on a positive note!

Moreover, recent signees might benefit from seeing discussions about the UX of HN for a couple of reasons. It would help spread knowledge about the features that come with familiarity, and provide some explicit notions of reasonable UX design for new UX designers.

*What do you like about HN?*

I'm a fan of HN's user-centric design. I really appreciate the favorites feature in particular, specifically about how favoriting a thread brings you to your favorites. It's a very functional bookmark system.

*What would you like to see improved?*

There are only two features I wish HN had: a way to remove the karma counts, and some method to receive notice about replies to comments/submissions. There's probably a way to cobble these features together, it would just be nice to have natively.

Wishing everyone and your loved ones the best! Hope y'all are having a good day, and stay safe :)

I agree about the notifications for replies etc...perhaps I've just not seen it yet!
On the one hand, it is nice to not have some of these drive-engagement features... on the other hand, I genuinely want to engage with HN posters!
Agreed. In that case, maybe we just have to make sure to schedule dedicated time for HN usage. Probably better for us to keep things like this manual :-).

Also, it gives us time to edit/delete our comments like a ninja!

Perhaps, in the spirit of "hacker" "news", one could write a script to check for replies and then notify us via email or something.

You could even possibly add in functionality to respond via email...
