You are most likely not doing a heart transplant where deadlines are real (or fixing a bridge that's almost going to collapse).
If you, as a manager, cannot arrange for deadlines to be real and realistic, you suck as a manager: it is not the employee's fault for possibly having other arrangements to go to.
