Onslaught games were enough fun to finally tempt our group out of Quake games.

One dude was utterly unable to run the vehicles, and then after a couple weeks he shows up one day and he can drive! Everyone comments on it and then after a couple games he confesses: he's recruited his 11yo son to play for him when called on to drive.

They played as a father and son team most of the rest of games we had. Much more effective than just Dad alone. Never did talk him into getting the kid his own computer; Mom wasn't happy about letting the kid on that long, he was supposed to be concentrating on TV like a normal boy.

Truly one of the greatest, sad to see how things have changed.

Back then you got a great game and the devs just gave you all the tools to mod it how ever you wanted. It even managed its own mods to some extent, auto-downloading everything you needed when joining a server.

Today it's all about rootkit anti-cheats and controlling the game and everything surrounding it with an iron fist, as to best monetize every little aspect of the game. No mods, no custom maps, no nothing, because everything has to be catered to give the players "the best experience".
