Ask HN: Safari 15 macOS: How to get rid of spaces between tabs?

The new Safari tab bar leaves substantial gaps between tabs. While I can get by with the new design, I don't accept the tab redesign, which is especially wasteful on a MacBook.

Is there a way to remove the spaces and compact the tabs to what they were before?
