Im wondering about this for a while, pv prices need to get so low to make sense to build huge pv farms next to iron ore mines & do it using hydrogen. Low efficiency you say? Even lower prices & saved co2 certificates need to be the answer. Western australia, north africa and arabia would be good places to start. Pipelines would also make sense. Why is no one pushing things like these?
A few are pushing things like that. Check out this project in Sweden: https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottcarpenter/2020/08/31/swedi...
Yes, also heard that a german steelmaker is doing the same - I wonder much more why no one is pushing the "cheap green energy production" thing. But maybe, the returns would be too small for the huge investments necessary (3+B at least, e.g. largest indian solar park). The key problem imo is that co2 certificates are _still_ too cheap! Green energy transistion need to be incentivized massively but no one is moving politically. I really hate it when on complex points like these conspiracies are stated, but the lobbies simply are too strong on everything which makes me mad. Its some simple game theory, a few players will push for mid-term return and ignore long term (100+ yrs), thats why regulation is necessary and lobbies need to be regulated / bounded too!
