Ask HN: How much could fixing a MacBook loose contact possibly cost?

4 points by schleck8 ↗ HN
The Apple support informed me fixing a screen lose contact would be 700+ €. The panel still works, it doesn't need to be replaced.

A week ago another supporter said exchanging the entire panel for a new retina one would be 350 € or less.

This sounds totally off. Does anyone here have experience with MacBook repairs?

I'd try to make an appointment at the "Genius Bar" and talking to someone about it. If it's a common issue, they might replace it for free if you're lucky.

They generally have a tiered repair pricing model and I think minor issues like the flex cable would cost around the cheaper price you've been quoted for and replacing the whole display would be the higher price.

I already sent it in - they only replace it for free with 13 inch models.

There isn't any Apple Stores nearby. I think I'll take it to a repair shop

This thread reminds me of many videos from Louis Rossmann unfortunately.
Depending on the year, you may be able to fix it yourself. Check iFixit for your model on how to replace the screen.

Follow the process there, which depending on your system could be as easy as remove the bezel, undo 4 screws, lean the screen forward, snug up the connector & put a fresh piece of kapton tape over it to hold it down and then put everything back together.

Okay, I'll look into it. The issue is the screen, which apparently needs to be replaced as a whole because Apple integrated a faulty 6 $ display cable into the panel to make it thinner. And the screens are only available from Apple... :/
