Well, the value isn't exactly the same.

Facebook has a much more tight platform where sharing options are a great plus. Increasing reach is easier and as a consequence it is more valuable than Google+.

"Take that, Facebook?" It isn't as though Google and Facebook have been at each other's throats in this business for years, and Google delivered a killing blow. They're entering this game very late so of course they're undercutting the competition to drive adoption. That's the way Google works.
