Ask HN: Open-source / DIY digitizing hand written notes?

Hi HN!

I have several years worth of handwritten notebooks that would be really cool to transcribe and make searchable within my personal knowledge management database.

I am wondering what options might be the best for transcribing many years of handwritten notes to digital format?

I was (naively) thinking of trying to learn some Machine Learning and train a model for OCR, but, am thinking this seems like a common problem that might have been solved before?
