Seven years in and he's still basically on a single debug room.

God help anyone who thinks this is how you should actually develop a game. I'm saying this as someone who writes "game code" in C for fun - just pick up Godot, Unity or any framework... you can get to where he is in a few days.

OK, your approach is different, but this project is about doing games from scratch, from almost zero to the level able of selling your game product. Godot, Unity, Unreal etc. is simply a different approach to game making. Is comparing handmade hero devlopment to a Godot,Unity,Unreal development realy a fair thing? I am just saying, he put all his efforts and publish all his code in public, so I think people can learn from his code too.

Is Handmade Hero for MS Windows developers only or can GNU Linux devs also learn from it? Can the code be usefull for us on GNU Linux too ?
