Ask HN: Committed weekly classes for CS/math/tech/finance?

7 points by j4hdufd8 ↗ HN
I'm taking some (human) language courses online and realized that the commitment of making time for class a few times a week really helps me learn and stay committed to learn. It's a normal language class where the students interact with each other in video.

Are there online classes in this format (online videocall, slides, exercises) for other areas like CS/math/tech/finance?

Are you familiar with open courseware platforms like coursera [0] or EdX [1]? The lectures are prerecorded, but there are weekly assignments, discussion forums to current students, etc. While the access to courses is free you can pay to get a "certificate" which is a form of commitment.

I've been successful with some courses that have kept my interest. Some courses didn't fit what I was looking for so I abandoned them.

Can you elaborate on the “interactions” you have during video sessions? I’m kinda uneasy about video classes and would really appreciate it.
I have taken CS/Tech courses on both edX and Coursera. They are very passive. I have participated in a forum a few times, most of the time I tend to seek out other resources when I tend to get stuck.
I still sometimes feel awkward zooming with my doctor. I know it sounds silly. I’ve exploring various online learning opportunities.
I think you want something like university/school, without the overhead. but usually live sessions would be pricey especially compared to watching prerecorded videos. I do think the experience is radically different, it's important to have a group advancing at similar pace to you as well as routine.
