But the cameras’ supporters said they felt mystified by all the resistance. Going soft on crime could put their families at risk, they argued — and no one on public roads should expect privacy, anyway. If their opponents weren’t criminals, what did they have to hide? Who wouldn’t want to feel safer?

If the government can't spy on you, get the corporations to do it.

Isn’t a simple solution to register your car and if it is detected do not add it to the general database. Maybe lock it down to require a court order or if a crime happens require a majority vote to unlock it for police only to view.
When I was a commuter, I saw private cars with plate scanners sweeping through the parking lots at the train station, they are hoping to collect a reward for finding someone in the system. It's upsetting, but I don't see how we could unroll this at this point.
