One thing I’ve struggled with a lot lately is 3b: gathering data.

Why? It takes time and others’ effort to gather non-misleading data. In order to justify that time, you have to prioritize it relative to other tasks. To do that, you need data to support your argument that the effort spent on gathering data will be worth the effort.

My professor used to say, “collect purposeful information”

Collect just enough for the decision you need to make now. Collect more if you decide to continue. Make sure there is a purpose for collecting the data. Favor accuracy up front & iteratively increase precision later.
