Sometimes I ask myself, why not email?

If we wanted to make an email client that worked like Slack, how & where would using email as the protocol to do so be difficult?

Take a look at delta chat.

Nice. A couple years ago I would be scoffing & trying to push XMPP on folks.

It would be neat to see a comparison versus Signal, Matrix, XMPP, & others. Delta Chat could, for example, maybe integrate with another service's voice/video chat. Can Delta Chat do reactions to messages? There's a lot of little questions I have about capabilities, but this sure looks like it covers a lot of the experience very well.

People have a problem with Signal: you cannot self-host its server. Sounds like you want to keep the mobile client, swapping out the server underneath.

I think you’re better off waiting until Moxie allows setting the remote server, and wrapping the Signal server with the email options you want.
