But when it came to level I hiring where I already expect the hires to need training, it would have been disingenuous to then filter on whether they already knew what I am expected to teach. What matters here is showing hunger to learn.

Bingo: I don't expect any new hire to be "up to speed" in less than 4 months - and that's even if they "already know" what I need them to know...because they don't know

- our processes

- our customers

- our culture

- our existing IP repository

- etc

You could have written the STL - doesn't mean you are at all ready to start working on our 100s of 1000s of C++ code
