True, but it's hard to compare China to the US market. Health, Safety, Welfare and Sustainability are allowed to accept more risk in those "innovative" markets. That being said, San Francisco might be the hardest US market to build in given the complex politics, culture and competition.
Chinese new buildings are terrible to live in. Its totally reasonable for the USA to require decent quality.

Really? I’ve visited relatives new-ish condos in a tower in middle of nowhere Anhui and it perfectly nice. OTOH, anything older like pre 2000 was pretty dumpy unless it was extensively renovated. The older houses were single family homes or townhouses, often with no heating, awful showers, etc etc.
Can confirm. If only we had bulldozed The Mission ten years back, we’d have enought towers for everybody now.
