But firms using the technology argue that they are acting reasonably, with so many employees now out of sight of managers and otherwise difficult to oversee.
I don’t get this manager’s need for a surveillance. You don’t stare at your engine all day to see how much power output it generates. You simply press the pedal and see how it goes after a while. It doesn’t matter if it works hard, or makes 300hp at only 50rpm — this is irrelevant if it does its job, and if it is easy for “them”, it’s their own trait which you didn’t pay for them to get. While management is inevitable in an organization, this level of control in my opinion is clearly a sort of slaver’s psychopathy.
What is also creepy is that people are devoid of any personal agency. Bosses like these are psychopaths who just test how far they can go. Forcing to install rootkits on private hardware is illegal anyway. Just say no, it is way harder to get fired than you think.

I agree, say no and hold your ground. But have no illusions about how hard it is for you to be fired; it's not hard at all (at least in the US). Check your contract. It likely says that your employer can terminate the contract for any reason. Any reason means anything unrelated to race or religion. So keep those emails which explain that you're being fired for that (that's sarcasm). Otherwise, you have literally no recourse. The flip side is you can terminate the contract. So, have some integrity, pay the consequences, and know that there are better people to work with. You will feel bad about how you've been treated but will be bouyed by the fact you stood up for yourself. You will find people who respect you when you consistently uphold your boundaries (politely).
Reality is a tough cookie. Slavery hasn't gone anywhere. Go thru most HN profiles. They show you their slave brand immediately, with great pride. Poor saps who have this ideal view of themselves, stuck working for royalty. Can't even have their own views. Most not even allowed to chat about their work. The great deception. Too entertaining
