We do these things, not because they are necessary, but because they are expensive
I wonder do astronauts have choices on which vehicle they want to get on.
Since there is only one vehicle for Artemis, no.
I wonder whatever happened to the goal of humans on Mars by the mid-2030s.
"Pie in the Sky"

Too expensive at the moment for anybody in the world to do.

Like fusion power has been "20 years away" for the last 60 years, NASA returning men to the Moon will be "4 years away" indefinitely.

The US no longer has the money available for such an expensive undertaking. Nor does it have the underlying manufacturing skills that would be necessary.

The only country in the world at the moment that has the necessary cash and manufacturing skills is China. They will reach the Moon before NASA does.
