I feel the word "stupidity" carries an appropriate level of emotion, but it suggests a lack of intelligence. Given several statements to the effect that this is found more in groups (which don't have intelligence) than it is in individuals, it feels as if an alternative word is needed.
Also it is a shame proper references are not given.
