Two points i found interesting:

- of the three compounds currently in clinical trials, they’re all relatively similar to known drug compounds, but unnumbered by patents (and hopefully more effective)

- the grand challenge in drug design involves a different objective function than most are currently solving — the real challenge is to identify which protein to target, but most drug discovery assumes a known target and optimizes drug compounds for that target

Protein targets are being slowly elucidated by the exposure of the mechanisms of various biochemical pathways. As we get a more complete picture, the emergent effects should start to become more clear
