This project borrows some of the most important security/privacy features from GrapheneOS (verified boot, per-app internet permission toggles, sandboxed Play Services) while improving performance over the stock ROM and adding a few high-demand features (e.g. call recording), and it doesn't go overboard with tinfoil hat level hardening (which may come at the cost of reduced performance). It also has a friendlier-looking website and an easier-to-follow install guide than Graphene. Seems like an objective upgrade from the stock Pixel ROM to me, assuming the features work as advertised.
For the record, I personally only trust GrapheneOS at the moment and this is what I use on my phone. Additionally, Graphene's hardening currently has minimal impact on performance. App launch times used to be noticeably slower than the stock ROM, but this has been fixed. ProtonAOSP is still relatively new and has yet to establish trust within the community. But I wish them success and think it's great that there are more ROM options coming out with a focus on privacy/security (even if it's not the main focus, as with Proton). Hopefully they branch out to non-Google phones as well. (GrapheneOS and CalyxOS, the two most well-known privacy-focused ROMs, only support Google Pixels due to their consistently unlockable bootloaders, hardware security, and long-term firmware updates. While using a non-Pixel is probably a legitimate security downgrade in most cases, many people understandably refuse to purchase a Google phone... for privacy.)
